New-Zealand

Although it is known that winegrowing in New-Zealand goes back to 1819, much is lost in the fogs of time. It is not before the early eighties of the 20th century that New-Zealand was put on the map of the wine world. In a northerly region on the South Island, that goes by the name of Marlborough, someone made a Sauvignon Blanc that took the world by storm. The first vineyards were planted in Marlborough only in 1973...

Marlborough and New-Zealand will always be associated with Sauvignon Blanc. The style that is produced here is unique and has no peers in the world. The bold aromas of gooseberry that literally jump out of the glass, the fruit-packed palate, the searing acidity that is somehow neatly wrapped in gallons of tropical fruit flavours... it just cannot be reproduced anywhere else.

Yet New-Zealand is expanding its scope and has more to offer than "Savvy" alone. Central Otago is well known for Pinot Noir, as is Martinborough, Gisborne is home to excellent Chardonnay, Hawkes Bay gives the world brilliant Cabernet/Shiraz-based wines and don't forget Riesling and Pinot Gris from little nooks and crannies all over the country.

New-Zealand may be a young wine country but it is a very dynamic one. Ten years ago there were 7.400 hectares of vineyard, that number has now increased to 34.270. Marlborough is the most important region by far, with its 22.587 hectares and indeed Sauvignon Blanc is the most important grape variety, with almost 20.000 hectares. Pinot Noir is growing very strong and is proving to feel quite at home in the cool climate. In some little corners of the North Island it produces wines with an almost European character. Almost 5.000 hectares are now devoted to Pinot Noir. New Zealand is predominantly producing white wines: roughly 27.000 hectares of white against 7.300 of red.

Export has become very important in a very short space of time: in 1981 2% of total production was exported, in 1991 that was 12%, in 2001 35% and in 2011 it was a whopping 70% - and production has increased explosively. That is no mean feat!

If there is one thing that characterizes the New Zealand wine industry it is their collective obsession with quality. It was the first wine producing country that by and large unanimously embraced the screwcap as the better option. As one winegrower once said: "I work hard all year to grow the best grapes I can. I work hard during harvest, to get my grapes to the cellar in perfect condition. Iwork hard in the cellar, to get the best wine I can. Why would I risk all that closing the bottle with a chunk of dead wood?" It may be somewhat bluntly put, but it certainly holds a grain of truth!
