Over het wijnhuis | Aldo Conterno was één van de twee zoons van ‘Barolokoning’ Giacomo Conterno. Aldo en broer Giovanni zijn allebei in de voetsporen van hun vader getreden, al volgden ze ieder hun eigen weg. Waar Giovanni de meer traditionele ideeën van zijn vader volgde, had Aldo andere ideeën over hoe ultieme Barolo zou moeten smaken, onder meer door zijn tijd in Californië. Al was Aldo zeker geen modernist pur sang. Het wijnhuis heeft drie wijngaarden, alle drie op kalkbodems, waarvan het huis de Romirasco-wijngaard ziet als de beste. 70% van de Nebbiolo-druiven in de topcuvée Granbussia Riserva zijn afkomstig van deze wijngaard. Met Granbussia creëerde Aldo Conterno een iconische Barolo en die creatie leeft tegenwoordig voort in het werk van zijn kinderen Giacomo, Stefano en Franco, die het wijnhuis nu runnen. |
Wijngaard en regio | De druiven komen uit de wijngaard Cicala in de cru Bussia in de commune Monforte d’Alba. De wijngaarden zijn 40-45 jaar oud en worden soms herplant om de kwaliteit te waarborgen. De bodems bevatten klei en kalksteen. |
Vinificatie | De druiven vergisten in RVS tanks gedurende 30 dagen, met schilcontact. De wijn rijpt daarna 29 maanden in houten vaten van Slavonisch eiken van 25 hectoliter. |

Awards | "A super-intense and perfumed Barolo, graceful and powerful, with aromas of Parma violets, citrus, leaves, lush cherries and yellow stone fruit. Full-bodied on the palate, it shows a velvety texture, ripe tannins despite the extraction, tight-knit acidity and graphite flavors. Long, lavish finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2027." - James Suckling "Giacomo Conterno maintains that 2021 is a fantastic vintage to demonstrate differences of site. Case in point, the Cicala vineyard is separated only by forest from the nearby Colonnello and is characterised by blue calcareous clay with iron. Of the two, the 2021 Cicala is much more difficult to read at this early stage, somewhat overwhelmed by its potent structure and oak. A lifted nose eventually reveals vanilla, tobacco and even chocolate inflecting the dark cherry fruit. Very linear with slightly coarse, broad tannins, perhaps time – which is highly recommended – will allow its more subtle characteristics to emerge." - Decanter "Monforte d’Alba. Calcareous soils and hence the roots need to go deep. Palish ruby. Lifted, concentrated cherry and raspberry nose with stunning minerality. Almost a little mouth-watering and then closes up. All the elements are so well balanced." - 94 punten, Vinous over de 2019-vintage "The Poderi Aldo Conterno 2016 Barolo Bussia Cicala offers a ripe fruit profile with layers of menthol and medicinal herb. The finish is beautiful, long and chalky, and you don't get as much alcohol in the Cicala (compared to Romirasco). The fruit is dried and streamlined, and this wine does show good promise for aging.
