| Over het wijnhuis | Saint Clair is vernoemd naar James Sinclair, die verantwoordelijk was voor de eerste nederzettingen in Blenheim, Nieuw-Zeeland, de thuishaven van het wijnhuis op het Zuidereiland. Opgericht in 1978 behoort het familiebedrijf tot de pioniers op het gebied van wijnbouw in Marlborough. Vandaar dat de link met pionier James Sinclair al snel werd gelegd. Saint Clair bezit ruim 270 hectare wijngaarden in Marlborough op het Zuidereiland, en in Hawke’s Bay op het Noordereiland. |

| Vinificatie | Hele trossen worden zachtjes geperst om structuur uit de steeltjes te krijgen. Het sap wordt vergist in gebruikte eikenhouten vaten, waarbij sommige vaten een spontane vergisting krijgen en sommige met geselecteerde gisten hun vergisting ondergaan. Vervolgens rijpt de wijn nog 11 maanden, waarbij de gistcellen regelmatig worden geroerd (batonnage), wat de wijn romiger maakt. |

| Awards | "The 2021 Barrique Sauvignon Blanc is complex and saturated with flavor. Oak has a propensity to somewhat stand apart from Sauvignon Blanc fruit, and it does so here. While the wine is complex and nuanced (hay, straw, Golden Delicious apples, nashi pear, white pepper, vanilla pod, nutmeg, cinnamon, etc.), it most certainly rolls out in stages, with tropical aromas, oak and fruit flavors through the finish. Perhaps this will come together in time. In the overall scheme of things, two years is not a long time for this cohesion to occur. It ferments in seasoned barriques then ages on lees (with regular stirring) for 11 months, before winemakers Stewart Maclennan and Hamish Clark choose the best barrels for the final blend. Roger Jones: Liquorice and dark fruit, sultanas, cedar notes, then on the mid-palate bright pineapple and peaches. Fresh and vibrant with good acidity. Freddy Bulmer: Attractive nose with positive oak influence and good concentration of fruit aromatics. Savoury notes, butterscotch and sweet tropical fruits combine. Salty and crisp with fine acidity. Cat Lomax: Slightly sweaty peach/ passionfruit notes with hints of tinned tropical fruit and white asparagus.
