Over het wijnhuis | Aldo Conterno was één van de twee zoons van ‘Barolokoning’ Giacomo Conterno. Aldo en broer Giovanni zijn allebei in de voetsporen van hun vader getreden, al volgden ze ieder hun eigen weg. Waar Giovanni de meer traditionele ideeën van zijn vader volgde, had Aldo andere ideeën over hoe ultieme Barolo zou moeten smaken, onder meer door zijn tijd in Californië. Al was Aldo zeker geen modernist pur sang. Het wijnhuis heeft drie wijngaarden in de cru Bussia, alle drie op kalkbodems: de wijngaarden Colonnello, Cicala en Romirasco. Het huis ziet de Romirasco-wijngaard als de beste. 70% van de Nebbiolo-druiven in de topcuvée Granbussia Riserva zijn afkomstig van deze wijngaard. Met Granbussia creëerde Aldo Conterno een iconische Barolo en die creatie leeft tegenwoordig voort in het werk van zijn kinderen Giacomo, Stefano en Franco, die het wijnhuis nu runnen. |
Wijngaard en regio | De druiven komen uit de cru Bussia in de comune Monforte d’Alba in Barolo. De wijngaarden zijn tijdens de jaren '90 aangeplant. De bodems bevatten veel klei. De wijngaarden liggen op zuidoosten. |
Vinificatie | De druiven vergisten in RVS tanks gedurende 20-30 dagen, met schilcontact. De wijn rijpt daarna 26-27 maanden in eikenhouten vaten van 25 hectoliter. |

It’s full in body, with exuberant acidity and a polished texture, finishing with cherry stones and licorice. However, the philosophy has long been to select the best and sell the rest of the grapes. In 2021, Giacomo Conterno said that the only concern was making overly opulent wines. There is a certain richness to the fruit, however it is well tempered by considerable structure. The nose flits between floral perfumes of rose and almond blossom to earthier nuances of wet autumn leaves and tobacco. Upfront tannins coat the mouth with grainy texture, while steely, vibrating acidity injects energy. It takes a while before the wine finds focus in the glass, but it does slowly come together to reveal broad layers of dark cherry, cassis and plum. There is some tannic tightness that leads to sour berry.
