Paus Clément V was namelijk groot wijnliefhebber en had niet alleen een vinger in de pap bij de ontwikkeling van Châteauneuf-du-Pape, maar was begin 1300 ook eigenaar van Domaine de la Mothe, de voorloper van Château Pape Clément.
